Sonata 'Undine' op. 167

Reinecke, C

International Music Company presents Sonata 'Undine', op. 167 for flute and piano edited by Stephanie Jutt.

This work is a sonata written by Carl Reinecke that is based on the popular legend of the water spirit, Undine. It is his opus 167, written in 1882. This sonata is normally associated with the Romantic genre and consists of four movements: Allegro, Intermezzo, Andante, and Finale.

From Jutt: 'This edition has been created after a review of the two earliest existing editions of the Reinecke 'Undine' Sonata. There is no known original manuscript version of this sonata, but there are two very early prints, which still exist. In the British Museum Library, you can find the very earliest print, published in 1882, in a published series called 'The Flute Player's Journal'. The second existing early print is the German first edition, published at least a year later by the Robert Forberg music publishing house, in Leipzig, Germany. There are a number of differences between the two versions, including some dynamic, rhythmic, and not differences. Both editions are valid in their own way. I decided to use as my source the earliest known edition, from the British Museum Library, which I believe represents Reinecke's original composition most accurately. As with any composition without an original composer's manuscript, I encourage the flutist and pianist to consult these early sources, and make their own musical choices. It's a lot of fun to conjecture 'what the composer really intended' and see the difference in the two editions--both so much alike, but with just enough differences to make for a lively discussion!' -Stephanie Jutt, 2013
